ACAM Dialogues: Reframing Mental Health through the Lens of Racism

We acknowledge and are thankful that this event will take place on the traditional, unceded, ancestral homelands of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), and Skwxwú7mesh (Squamish), and səl̓ilwətaɁɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) First Nations.

What does mental health in Asian Canadian communities mean to you? How do we talk about mental health within our communities? How do we sustain support for each other and ourselves?

The 2018/19 ACAM Dialogues on Mental Health in Asian Canadian Communities is a continuation of events that took place in March 2018, which explored experiences of mental health within Asian Canadian contexts. This year’s series intends to draw from topics that emerged from these initial discussions, such as racism, queerness, disability, uneven access to resources, collective healing, and intergenerational relationships. The series will be composed of discussion events and art-based gatherings, where students can collectively work through and imagine how we might continue these threads of dialogue.

The first event, titled “Reframing Mental Health through the Lens of Racism in Academia,” invites students to engage with questions around the connections between mental health and the lived experiences associated with racism, particular for students of colour in academia.

Given the discussion topic, please note that this event will centre students of colour, with particular focus towards students of Asian Canadian communities. We invite all to attend (including staff and faculty), while being mindful of what it means to engage in a space of respectful and conscientious dialogue.

This project is generously supported by the Equity Enhancement Fund by the UBC Equity & Inclusion Office.
