Join ACAM, ACRE, and INSTRCC on January 14 at the Museum of Vancouver for a Lunar New Year’s gathering of food, celebration, connection, conversation and one last chance to share in and see the hard work of our students and researchers before “A Seat at the Table” closes forever just a few weeks later in February 2023. Bring your family elders, your kids, nieces and nephews for a multi-generational experience of engaging with this amazing exhibit!
As you may know, ACAM and INSTRCC students were vital contributors to “A Seat at the Table”, a multiple award-winning museum exhibit, featured at the Museum of Vancouver and the Chinese Canadian Museum. They created oral history interview clips, digital visualizations, and other exhibit content that was then presented as part of the exhibition.
UBC INSTRCC Research Director Denise Fong, BA’03, MA’08, was a co-curator along with Dr. Viviane Gosselin, MOV, Prof. Henry Yu, UBC, and a team of over a dozen UBC students. The team worked for over three years to put together the exhibits, which later received the Public History Prize from the Canadian Historical Association in 2021 and the Outstanding Achievement in Exhibitions Award from the Canadian Museums Association in 2022.
Co-curator and UBC PhD candidate Denise Fong will offer guided tours in Mandarin and Cantonese – a special opportunity for family elders who are more comfortable in Chinese to hear about all the work that went into the exhibit. There will also be guided tours in English with members of the UBC team who worked on the exhibit. You will hear from students and alumni about their behind-the-scenes experiences in shaping the award-winning displays.
Please join us in our celebration and take the opportunity to reconnect with old classmates and friends from the last 18 years of UBC classes! At this gathering, we will also update you on the progress at UBC of the Centre for Asian Canadian Research and Engagement, a commitment made during the National Forum on Anti-Asian Racism convened at UBC in June 2021.
